Yarael Poof was a Quermian Jedi Master during the Republic's final days. As with all Quermian, Poof was tall and thin with slender limbs, and a long neck, which held up a round head. In addition, Poof had two sets of arms, one set he kept hidden beneath his Jedi robes. Also, as was common to his species from the planet of Quermia, Poof had his olfactory senses located in his hands, as well as two brains, one located in his head and the other located in his chest.

Yarael Poof was a powerful Jedi Master, who preferred to solve problems without the use of violence. Because of this, Poof developed the skill to project illusions into his adversaries' minds images of what they feared most. Most of the time, this was enough to deter and defeat anyone who was bent on doing Poof or anyone else harm, but for the cases where engagement was the only solution, Poof carried long, blue-bladed lightsaber. Because of his proficiency with the Force, Poof was eventually asked to join the Jedi Council in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

Accepting the invitation and sitting in between Jedi Masters Adi Gallia and Eeth Koth, Poof served on the Council to answer some of the galaxy's most pressing issues. One of those issues was the training of Anakin Skywalker. The boy was brought before the Council by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn with a request that the boy be trained. The choice was put to a vote by the Council, and Yarael was one of the Jedi Masters who voted that Anakin should be trained.
